SMOG-1 Mission started

SMOG-1 successfully launched yesterday by a Soyuz 2.1a/Fregat rocket. In all, this flight launched with 38 satellites from 18 countries in a variety of sizes, from 500 kg microsatellites to .25U CubeSats and 1P PocketQubes including our tiny SMOG-1.

Today SMOG-1 successfully deployed, opened its antennas and began its mission in space. Due to its small size and the high (about 550km) initial altitude of the orbit, SMOG-1 will be able to use its instruments and send us useful scientific measurement results for a long time. The primary mission of the satellite is the measurement of electromagnetic pollution generated by human activity in space around the Earth. This radiation is called electrosmog, from which the name of the satellite originated. As a secondary mission, an experimental radiation measurement system is on board, which measures and studies the effect of solar wind (particles coming from the Sun) on electronics. SMOG-1 has an additional, tertiary mission (compared to SMOG-P), a special magnetically lossy material which was placed underneath the solar panels and serves as a brake. It is expected to shorten the 18-25 year lifespan of the orbit, therefore minimizing the amount of time which is spent as space trash, after completing the active mission.
